Fuck it gonna be barve/stupid and post this.
Posting my thoughts might be a bad idea beacuse some of you love nothing more than invalidating others... so i am having a ...
Desclaimer: I have had a few beers, so if I ever gt shit for it, i am just going to blame it on the booz.
Albeit, I am a 'NEW JACK' - I just wanna tell you that this scene fucking stinks - with the exception of few individuals who have a heart of GOLD... My reasons are below...
My story goes like this: Got into what you call 'DIY' HC back in 97. My best buddies - room mates with Mend this tear members - So my understanding of HC at the time did not extend beyond the a few german/us cd's and what positive outlook churned out - I had no idea that there was london scene or if such one existed at the time- never the less I was sucked in once I saw the posi attitude of the peterborough kids - and I fell in love with something beautiful - I thought to my self how amazingthis is and how I would love to fully embrace it... but sadly I had to go to the states.
So the first thing i did once I got to Orange County was hit the message boards and local clubs in vein of finding something similar to what I have breifly experienced. Alas, I was lucky, I met this girl who introduced me to her friends and who then introduced me to the wider circle. I was accepted as an outsider immediately, there was no if's or butts, no image problems no 'who the hell are you' no 'what the hell you wearing' no 'I am better than you because I have been here longer' it was just so relaxed so open minded so honest and so true.
People are constantly putting 'new jacks' down, most of you are not tolerant of new 'outsiders' or their views or if they have something positive to give, your opinionated and critical withought being constructive, you perceive everything to be competitive withought working with people towards the common goal. you surround your self in groups withought enjoying the fruits of a wider stronger collective.
Ever Since I came back from the states and withought the knowledge of a LONDON scene I tried to set up a shows, I wanted to be involved , the first was at new cross, all I knew about london HC at the time was Knuckledust, so I emailed them, pedro then FWD me the details for the rucktion bands, then I heard that Brutal Fight 'West coast' were touring, so they got added... all this on innititive and the help of the guys from KD, 9bar and Kartel, but did anyone turn up??? hec no, we had to do a whip round between the bands to pay of the venue!
I have put on around 6 or 7 gigs now, and - always withought fail - all I hear, is 'do this' 'do that' ' your not as good as him/her'...
I am not talking just about my own experiences, but many ppl have experienced negativity .. when new kids show up at shows they get dirty looks, when a band is mentioned in kerrang we disown them, if ppl didn't do it to ourliking we reject them, if ppl don't suck up to us then we dont know em...but if it wasn't the few guys/girl of RUCKTION/and other, then London is fucking SSSHIT.
To encourage a healthy scene, to see a growing scene develop withought the bullshit that comes with it then we need to let down our gard down , and understand that we don't own the bands, we don't own the scene, but we all have each other, so let us be positive, and encourage 'NEW JACKS', to accept them even if they wore silly mesh caps (maybe not -jokes), or had long hair, or did not know about the most obscure bands from japan (1000 travels of Jawaharal Fucking kill it - check em out)...
Hell I don't have any answers, but I know for sure that hardcore is not what you wear, what hair style, how many tats you have or where you hang out, but for me HArdcore is a passion, enjoyment, TRUTH, beliefs, and a wide community, I want to believe that if I went to some mid western hick town in the states(or nottingham) I could meet ppl who have similar interests and thus achieving friendship.
What has happened to the Ethics of Hardcore? Have we forgotten them?
Being a 'new jack' inall I know most of you won't like what I have said, or even agree with it, but we all have the right to express ourselves and have our opinions.
